Four Case Examples of the NOJA Power GMK Pad Mounted Recloser

NOJA Power GMK

Many medium voltage connection projects can be addressed by the NOJA Power GMK Switchgear assembly. The GMK offers users cost-savings over discrete systems, as the GMK is equipped with extensive protection and control capabilities that usually require expensive third party equipment. Here we explore four case applications of the NOJA Power GMK.

1. Connecting Battery Energy Storage to the MV Distribution Grid

In Queensland Australia, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are deployed to improve system strength. As the state works towards greater proportions of renewables in the generation mix, these sites provide storage and stability.

The NOJA Power GMK was selected as the interconnecting switchgear, connecting a 5 MW bank of Tesla Battery Storage at Black River in Queensland.

2. Mining Switchgear

NOJA Power’s GMK has seen deployment in multiple mines, where the integration of equipment and interlocks of switchgear allow for safety and cost improvements of operations.

3. Connection of Rail Infrastructure

While most rail operates at voltages above conventional distribution, the NOJA Power GMK has found multiple applications in feeding the substations that connect to this infrastructure.

A key example includes the Victorian Rail Auto-Changeover Scheme, where two GMKs are connected to two different incoming sources. The GMKs share information via a fibre-optic connection, and will automatically switch sources in the event of power quality degradation on the active source.

4. Solar Farm Integration

Perhaps the most common application of NOJA Powers’ GMK product, Solar farm connections to the distribution grid are common in Australia, and the GMK’s integrated suite of protection capabilities make it an ideal device for this application.

Features such as ROCOF, Voltage Vector Shift and other cogeneration capabilities are standard in the product. Developers can optimise their costs in integration by reducing the amount of equipment required to connect these infrastructure assets to the grid.

“Our ground mount kiosk product, which can house either 1 or 2 of our auto reclosing circuit breakers, is supplied complete with the customers’ choice of RC control providing the full connection solution in all of these applications,” says NOJA Power Group Managing Director Neil O’Sullivan.

“This includes power quality and revenue metering as well as all of the advanced protection functionality in our RC controls and the embedded RTU for Scada remote control and monitoring as well. GMK is really the complete renewable energy grid connection solution.”
