BIL Levels For Reclosers

The level of BIL required for medium voltage recloser applications can be difficult to determine if the wrong standards are applied.

NOJA Power type tests all its reclosers to ANSI C37.60-2003 both in-house and at independent testing facilities. This is the only standard in existence that specifically deals with testing requirements for medium voltage reclosers.

ANSI C37.60 requires BIL testing to ensure reclosers are built to a level which helps to prevent damage to equipment following lightning strikes. In particular it takes into account the unique characteristics of vacuum interrupters where impulse currents can pass through the open contacts without damage to the interrupter unit.

NOJA Power has conducted its own research into this characteristic and has concluded that these currents actually end up improving the di-electric strength of the vacuum interrupter and possibly also help to protect other equipment from lightning damage.

ANSI C37.60-2003 requires the following impulse withstand levels to be achieved:

  • 15.5kV Vacuum Interrupted Recloser - 110kV
  • 27kV Vacuum Interrupted Recloser - 125kV

Our 15kV and 27kV OSM reclosers meet these requirements. In addition, the 27kV model can be supplied with a 150kV BIL option by adding surge arrestors for each bushing.
