Innovative Tank Design Proves Its Reliability In The Field

The OSM auto-recloser has been installed into substations and feeders around the world with unprecedented success. Despite a wide range of applications, installation methods and environmental conditions, the OSM has proved itself time and time again to be reliable.

The switching components have in particular been totally reliable. In all the years the OSM has been in service only two switching modules have developed a fault after installation and commissioning. In both cases the problem was with the current sensors. The OSM has never developed any faults in service with vacuum bottles, switching mechanisms or insulation components.

Actual reliability figures are rarely published in this part of the industry. And when they are they are often based on theoretical calculations rather than actual in-service data. Despite this lack of hard comparative data, we believe the OSM has been the most reliable new tank design to have been introduced into the market in recent years.

The main reasons for its reliability is good research and development, thorough type testing, and a commitment to quality during manufacture and final testing.

The OSM recloser is a fourth generation design using vacuum interruption and combined solid-dielectric insulation. There is no SF6 gas or oil at all. Instead the design focuses on careful vacuum interrupter design and a unique combination of insulation materials housed in an arc-fault contained and vented tank.
